On Monday, September 9, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will be celebrating the Club’s annual award winners at the Dr George Peponis Medal.

Since 2023, the Club’s annual awards night has been named after Dr George Peponis OAM; MBBS, one of the finest ever players to ever pull on the Blue and White.

Club Legend: George Peponis OAM; MBBS played nine season for the Club, captaining the Bulldogs, Blues and Kangaroos with success. His leadership saw the Bulldogs break a 38-year Premiership drought in 1980.
Club Legend: George Peponis OAM; MBBS played nine season for the Club, captaining the Bulldogs, Blues and Kangaroos with success. His leadership saw the Bulldogs break a 38-year Premiership drought in 1980.

A Greek migrant hailing from the Peloponnese, George first took the field for the Bulldogs in 1974, going on to feature in 132 matches over a stellar nine-year career until 1982.

Over that period, George’s achievements in the game of Rugby League saw him captain the Bulldogs to two Grand Finals, including the 1980 Premiership, represent NSW in seven matches, and pull on the green and gold of Australia in eight Test matches, captaining five.

Following his playing days, George held roles as Chairman of both the Club and the NSW Rugby League, and has since been named at hooker in the Berries to Bulldogs 70-Year Team of Champions in 2004. George was also inducted in the Bulldogs Ring of Champions in 2007, as well as the inaugural Hall of Fame in 2015 as one of just five players.

He is also a proud Life Member of the Football Club.

PrestonMania: Jacob Preston took home the Dr George Peponis Medal in 2023, capping off a remarkable rookie season. He also took home the Rookie of the Year and Members' Player of the Year gongs.
